QUEEN´S ELM

Sooner or later
we will walk out of here
and take the path
that leads to the door
that opens into the passage
that leads to the gate
that guards the garden
of English letters

Ageing beatniks
attractively set in the aspic of their memories
black shawls and long scarves
shrouding sensibilities
against the cold
in the rose garden

Oh Maud with your
tame black bats -
you are already there
amongst a host of golden daffodils -
not knowing night from dawn
your footsteps crack the moon,
I think,
your laughter peals,
like the petals of the rose
that gently fall on the frozen ground.
